Brookie-O

The Brookie

I have scoured the corners of the internet for this month's flavor reflection and have come to a simple conclusion. There is no incorrect way to rock a brookie recipe. Perhaps you watch Shark Tank and know the brookie from "Milk + Brookies." Some credit this L.A. business as the first to "Frankenstein" brownies and cookies. Or, maybe your Pinterest and Instagram journeys led you to this gem. If Nabisco's newest Brookie-O Oreo cookies (released January 2021) are your first introduction to the concept, you are in for a treat! It feels like humanity should have invented this a while ago, but better late than never. We are B and V and WE RATE OREOS!

Creativity

V - ALL THE CREATIVITY POINTS! B and I love to talk about what new flavors Nabisco should do next.  However, we have never considered a brookie. One of my favorite parts of following Oreo creations so closely is how they continue to surprise me with flavor profiles that are so simply good and yet too often overlooked.

B - Brookie itself is a creative dessert. It wasn't even really a thing until like 2009. So I think any recipe attempting to incorporate brookie into another medium of dessert is doubly creative.

Execution

V - A good brookie has solid layers of brownie batter and cookie dough, baked together in perfection. Nabisco's version has crisp layers of cookie dough, brownie, and classic Oreo creme sandwiched between chocolate cookies. The cookie dough is the strongest flavor and just slightly overpowers the batter and classic creme. With three layers, they are just as sweet as the real deal. The Bookie-O brings me back to the days of over-sugared childhood sleepovers. The hype and crash are real with these.

B - Gotta disagree with V here. While I was pretty excited for these, I was unfortunately underwhelmed with the result - it tasted more like a s'mores than a brookie? So I'd have to say poor execution. I didn't even finish two rows in the package.

Does it Sparkle?

B - Very pretty; good separation of layers; Instagram-ready.

V - Like an onion, the Brookie-O has layers. Unlike an onion, the Brookie-O's layers are beautiful and enticing. You can see and appreciate all the elements of a brookie in avant-garde, deconstructed form. Once the Brookie-O catches your eye, it's hard to look away.

Pairing

V - The Brookie-O embraces sweetness. Why not accentuate the sugar with a glass of Moscato? If you are looking to balance the sugar rush, a mug of black coffee will do the trick.

B - Pair with something that has a strong flavor to embolden the cookie. On its own, I don't think the flavor of the cookie was very pronounced. Just didn't taste very sweet or chocolate-y to me. I'd actually recommend putting these into a recipe instead of pairing. Maybe put as a crumble on an actual brownie, a sundae, or pudding.

Buy Again?

V - Personally, no. They were good but I am already excited for the next flavors to come out!

B - "Thank u, next"
