Mint To Be
Mint to Be
Who doesn't love Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream? We have Marilyn Ricketts, an English culinary student, to thank for inventing this delightful flavor in 1973. Originally called "Mint Royale," Ricketts' creation placed at a competition to provide a new ice cream flavor for Princess Anne's wedding at Westminster Abby. In continuation of Ricketts' creative spirit, Nabisco released Baskin-Robbins Mint Chocolate Chip Oreos this August 2019. Would these cookies meet royal standards? We'll find out! We are B and V and WE RATE OREOS!
Flavor Creativity
B- Mint is a classic flavor. The ice cream flavor - not so much. At least in a non-ice cream dessert.
V- So creative! I see mint chocolate chip everything, but mint chocolate chip ice cream is something special.
Flavor Execution
V- It's very good! It tasted a little more like a Thin Mint than creamy Baskin-Robbins ice cream, but they had lovely bits of chocolate and mint in the creme that were an absolute delight. Sometimes too much mint puts my taste buds in toothpaste territory, but not these cookies! The balance is perfect.
B- Well done, Oreo. I agree with V in that it's not really as much like Baskin Robins as it is the girl scout cookie. It tastes just like a thin mint! But this version has better texture and is less dry imo. Haven't tried to freeze them yet, so don't worry - the two are probably not interchangeable.
Does it Sparkle?
B- So sparkly.
V- Yes! The big scoop of ice cream on the package reminds us that these are ice cream flavored, rather than just regular mint. It piqued my curiosity (honestly an easy thing to do) and even made me a little nostalgic for this simple childhood staple.
Pairing
V- Orange Juice! Just kidding, don't do that. The mint and chocolate flavors pair wonderfully with stouts and porters.
B- Chocolate and mint are a time-honored pairing. It would be good as an after-dinner cookie; cleanse the palate, ya know?
Buy Again?
B- Yes. I like mint and I like these cookies even better. Plus they're cheaper than other alternatives including the girl scout version or a double scoop at B.R.
V- No. I've never been a huge mint fan, as good as these are! They also took AGES to appear on the shelves down in small-town Ohio.
Final Thoughts
V- Yes! These are good cookies! They are a perfect balance of familiar and creative.
B- No complaints here. And no offense to any of the industries mentioned. Disclaimer: I am just a consumer and this blog is not paid.
